Osgood denied
DETROIT – It wasn’t meant to be Sunday.

The Dallas Stars spoiled Chris Osgood’s first crack at career win No. 400 when they came from behind to defeat the Red Wings, 4-3 in overtime, Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.

The 38-year-old Osgood was terrific throughout the game, particularly in the final two periods. He stopped 28 Stars’ shots, but was beat by Dallas forward Loui Eriksson who scored at 4:18 of the extra session.

Osgood was trying to become only the 10th goalie in NHL history to reach the wins milestone, joining Martin Brodeur (607 wins), Patrick Roy (551), Ed Belfour (484), Curtis Joesph (454), Terry Sawchuk (447), Jacques Plante (437), Tony Esposito (423), Glenn Hall (407), and Grant Fuhr (403).

With every save he made Sunday, the JLA crowd, which clearly knew what was at stake, cheered wildly for their popular veteran goalie, who was a Red Wings’ third-round draft pick in 1991.  One of the loudest ovations came on a Stars’ power-play late in the second period. Positioned in the low slot, Eriksson, who also had two assists in the game, took a pass from behind the Wings’ net and blistered a point-blank shot.  Osgood turned the shot aside, and the crowd serenaded the goalie with a boisterous “Ozzie! Ozzie!” chant.

Osgood ranks second in wins amongst active NHL goalies, behind only the Devils’ Brodeur, and he will become the fourth member of the 400 Club to have spent time in a Red Wings’ uniform. The others were Sawchuk, Hall and Joseph.

It’s not known when Osgood will get his second shot at 400, but with a pair of back-to-back coming up in the next eight days, it’s likely that he’ll play next at St. Louis this Thursday.
