City of Novi to honor Nicklas Lidstrom by renaming street

DETROIT – His name appears on the Stanley Cup four times, he’s won the Norris Trophy six times, and last week, The Hockey News called him a “freak of nature” in a seven-page cover story.

Now, the man who has accomplished everything in his sport, will have a suburban Detroit street renamed in his honor.

The city of Novi plans to pay tribute to Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who resides in the Oakland County community during the hockey season, by renaming the stretch of road that leads up to Novi Ice Arena.

Arena Drive, a short, winding road off of Novi Road, south of West 10 Mile Road, will be renamed Nick Lidstrom Drive.

“I’m truly honored to be recognized like that and to have a street named after me,” Lidstrom said. “I know where’s it’s going to be right near the Novi Ice Arena. … I’ve had all four of my kids play hockey through that association.”

The new street sign will be unveiled during a dedication ceremony on March 24.

Lidstrom will join former teammate Steve Yzerman as the only Red Wings to be recognized with a local street name.

Upon learning of the Novi honor, Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom, who often carpools with Lidstrom to Joe Louis Arena, was excited for his friend.

“So now I have to see it every day when I drive by it?” asked Holmstrom with a laugh. “Oh well, that’s OK. Good for him.”

Wings center, and Livonia native Mike Modano knows a thing or two about having an association with something significant – like a city street – named for himself. His name is on the Mike Modano Ice Arena in suburban Westland, Mich. 

“It’s never going to go away, and they can never take it away from you,” Modano said. “It’s something that will be there forever. It’s a great honor. If I had a nickel for everybody who has come up to me and said that they’ve skated there this year, it would be a big response.”

Even though Modano has won his share of awards, and a Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999, having his name affixed to a building for posterity will always be special.

“I think the rink was more honorable than the Cup,” Modano said. “Cups come and go, but the rink and that street name will be there for good.”

When originally approached about the street by city officials, it was overwhelming, Lidstrom said.

“First, I was like, ‘Wow! They would do that for me?’ ” he said. “It was that kind of feeling, but then it quickly turned to being an honor.”


This event will take place outdoors at the City of Novi Ice Arena (currently, 42400 Arena Drive, off Novi Road, just south of 10 Mile Road). The event will include a sign presentation to Lidstrom, shoot-out contest, giveaways, and free refreshments.

Parking at the City of Novi Ice Arena for the event is limited. A shuttle service will be available from the Novi Civic Center (45175 West 10 Mile Road) starting at 4:45 p.m. EDT.
