NOVI, Mich. - For years, Nicklas Lidstrom has been turning onto Arena Drive to take his four sons to Novi Ice Arena. Now, he will be turning onto a street named in his honor.

The city of Novi, where Lidstrom and his family reside during the hockey season, officially unveiled Nick Lidstrom Drive on Thursday. In a ceremony held outside the arena, Novi Mayor David Landry and members of the Novi Youth Hockey Association welcomed the Red Wings’ captain and his family.

“This is our way of honoring a member of our community,” Landry said. “He’s a family man, he’s a husband, he’s a father. Hard work, teammate, excellence -- those are the kinds of values that we hold high in Novi, and that’s why we’re happy to honor Mr. Lidstrom.”

Joined on stage by his wife and three of his children (oldest Kevin is attending a school in Sweden), the four-time Stanley Cup champion thanked the hundreds of fans and hockey players who turned out for the event, and said he appreciated being honored by the city in which he and his family have lived for 20 years.

“It makes it even more special that it’s leading up to a hockey arena, especially one that I’ve spent a lot of time at,” Lidstrom said before the ceremony. “My kids have gone through these programs, it means something special that it’s here.”

With the rare honor, Lidstrom joins Mike Modano as the only other current Red Wing to have a landmark named after him. The city of Westland, Mich., named one of their ice arenas after Modano, who grew-up in nearby Livonia. Lidstrom said it was a bit of a shock when he first heard about the plans.

“I was very surprised when I heard the news,” he said. “And then they asked me about it, what I thought of it, and I was very proud of having a street named after me.”

Lidstrom said that his sons have played on youth hockey teams that have skated out of Novi Ice Arena, which means that counting how many times he has driven on the road now named after him would be impossible.

“All four kids played here, so doing it a few times a week. I don’t know, it’s hard to say – thousands?”

All the time spent inside the local ice arena means that Lidstrom is starting to feel like a regular hockey dad at times.

“I think they’re used to seeing me here now,” Lidstrom said about the fans he meets at the rink. “I’ve been coming here for so many years with my boys. I’ve been signing a lot of autographs when I come here too, but I think they’re just getting used to seeing me here now.”
