BY THE NUMBERS: Mike Modano
By The Numbers will highlight the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments in the 2010-11 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. This week we focus on center Mike Modano.

Games missed after the veteran center suffered a horrific cut to his right wrist when he accidentally slashed by a skate blade of Columbus’s R.J. Umberger in a game at Nationwide Arena on Nov. 26. The injury required surgery to repair damaged tendons and nerves.

Made his Wings’ debut and scored his first NHL goal for a team not named the Minnesota North Stars or Dallas Stars. His first-period goal, set-up by Danny Cleary and Brad Stuart, gave the Wings a 2-0 lead in what was eventually a 4-0 season-opening win over Anaheim.

40

The second fewest number of games that the future hall of famer has played in a season during his 22 NHL seasons. The lock-out of 1994-95 held him to 30 games that year with the Stars.

Total shots fired upon goalie Brent Johnson in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 21. He finished the game with a power-play goal and was minus-2. It was his highest SOG total since he recorded eight vs. Detroit on Dec. 9, 2009.

5

A season-high point streak when he compiled a goal and four assists between Nov. 3-11. The Red Wings posted a 4-1-0 record during that stretch with wins over Calgary, Phoenix and two over Edmonton.

Despite playing in just 40 games this season, he still has played in the second highest number of games among active NHL players. Only Mark Recchi (1,652) has played in more. He also ranks 14th all-time in NHL history in games played. Gordie Howe is still tops with 1,767 games.
