Wings annual smoke detector collection this weekend
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings and forward Henrik Zetterberg encourage fans coming down to this weekend’s preseason home games on Friday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 2, to support the team’s 10th annual Smoke Detector Collection presented by Comerica.

Fans who donate either a smoke detector with batteries or make a monetary donation at Joe Louis Arena will be entered to win autographed Henrik Zetterberg hockey pucks. Doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Representatives from local fire departments, including Detroit FD and Southfield FD, along with volunteers from Comerica Cares will be on hand to collect smoke detectors and monetary donations, which will be used to purchase additional smoke detectors.

In his sixth season as the team spokesman for this initiative, Zetterberg will personally match the donations made by fans this fall. He participated in an autograph signing at Hockeytown Authentics earlier this week, raising over $2,200 and collecting more than 230 smoke detectors for the cause.

“It’s a pretty neat thing,” Zetterberg said. “It’s for a great cause, not every home has smoke detectors and it could really be a life saver. When the Red Wings approached me to see if I wanted to be involved in all this I said ‘yes’ right away.”

During National Fire Prevention Week, he will distribute smoke detectors from this year’s collection on Tuesday, Oct. 11, following practice to representatives from local fire departments including Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Southfield and Troy. The fire departments will then, in turn, donate and install the fire alarms to low-income residents throughout Metro Detroit, who could otherwise not afford one.

“This is huge,” City of Troy Fire Department Lieutenant Chuck Riesterer said of the importance of this initiative. “You get the name draw from the Red Wings to get people to come in, and then we get the benefit of smoke alarms. There really is no other program for us to have to draw the people to bring the smoke alarms in. Now we can redistribute these smoke alarms to people who need them.”

The annual Smoke Detector Collection began in 2001 in memory of former Red Wings player Brendan Shanahan’s father, who was a firefighter. Since the program’s inception, the Red Wings have distributed more than 14,500 smoke detectors to local fire departments and agencies.
