Bruised knee sidelines Commodore
DETROIT – Mike Commodore, who has been battling in the preseason for a role as a sixth defenseman when the Red Wings open the regular-season next Friday, has a bruised MCL and could miss up to three weeks.

Commodore, who signed a one-year free agency contract with the Wings in July, was injured late in the second period of the Wings’ 4-3 loss in Chicago Wednesday night.

“I think I just caught a rut when I opened up to go after a guy one-one-one, and my knee just kind of buckled in a little bit,” said the 6-foot-4 Commodore, who’s never experienced prior knee problems. “I knew that something was wrong right when it happened. I was kind of standing there when the whistle went, and something didn’t feel right. And I’ve never had a knee problem before. I went out for one other shift there; took a couple of strides and it didn’t feel right, so I got off.”

Commodore’s injury will not require the Wings to put him on long-term injured reserve.

“They told me he's probably 1-3 weeks,” general manager Ken Holland said. “Good news is we play two games a week. We're not in position – because our games are so spread out – to put someone on (long term) IR because it's a minimum of 10 games.”

Commodore hasn’t skated since sustaining the injury, which he is viewing as day-to-day. However, he doesn’t know if he’ll be ready for the opener against Ottawa, or when he might return to practice.

“I have no idea. It’s up in the air,” he said. “I have no idea how it’s going to react. I know there’s no major damage, so 2-3 days from now it could be perfect. I don’t know. … It’s all with the swelling and the pain, and if the movement isn’t there, then there’s no point in aggravating it. It’s about the same, just been icing it at the hotel.”
