Emmerton shines in 5-3 win
DETROITCory Emmerton said that he never envisioned the kind of start to a season that he had Friday night in the Red Wings’ 5-3 season-opening win over the Ottawa Senators.

The 23-year-old Emmerton, who battled liked crazy in training camp in the exhibition season, collected two points in just his third NHL game. He played twice, and scored one goal, last season with the Wings.

Emmerton helped the Wings built a 5-0 lead with a goal and an assist on two shots.

“I didn't really imagine this kind of start,” he said. “I just wanted to play well. It was a great night for myself, but I wouldn't have happened without my linemates. They were incredible. They made some good plays and I was benefiting because of the work that they did.”

Emmerton centered the Wings’ fourth line with Drew Miller on the left wing and Tomas Holmstrom on the right.

“We had a game plan of wanting to make their defense turn and get in on them,” said Emmerton, who had 34 goals and 77 assists in three seasons with the Wings’ top farm club in Grand Rapids. “Anytime you can do that you can get some chances. And it's tough to play when your feet are facing your own net.”

Miller also had two assists Friday. It was his first multi-point game since he scored twice in a 7-4 win at Los Angeles last February.

“I thought Emmerton was really strong down the middle on our fourth line and Miller played well on that group,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “And I thought the Helm line was very dominant and so we know the rest is going to come together. But if those two groups can play like that, we’re off to the race.”
