Zetterberg to distribute smoke detectors
DETROIT –  As part of National Fire Prevention Week, Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg will distribute more than 5,000 smoke detectors to local fire department representatives following the team’s 11 a.m. practice on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The fire departments will then, in turn, donate and install the smoke alarms to low-income residents throughout Metro Detroit, who could otherwise not afford one.

During the team’s 10th annual Smoke Detector Collection presented by Comerica, fans donated 315 smoke detectors and more than $8,700 when attending a Zetterberg autograph signing on Sept. 26 as well as pre-season games on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. In his sixth season as the team spokesman for this initiative, Zetterberg personally matched the fans’ donations with a $10,321 donation to purchase additional smoke alarms.

The annual Smoke Detector Collection began in 2001 in memory of former Red Wings player Brendan Shanahan’s father, who was a firefighter. Since the program’s inception, the Red Wings have distributed more than 19,500 smoke detectors to local fire departments and agencies.
