Wings, Fifth Third team up for S.H.O.T.S.
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings and Fifth Third Bank have announced another year of the S.H.O.T.S. program (Students Helping Others Through Service), an initiative that encourages southeast Michigan high school students to volunteer their time in an effort to make a positive impact on the local community. Students can enter by creating a team of up to six participants that design and carry out a project that is geared toward improving the community around them.

The contest runs from the beginning of October through the end of February. Monthly prizes feature a pizza party and tickets to see the Red Wings in action. One student team will be awarded the Grand Prize, which includes recognition at Joe Louis Arena during the Red Wings’ game on March 24, up to six tablet PCs and a $530 donation to their school on behalf of Fifth Third Bank to support the team’s future service efforts.

”Fifth Third Bank has a passion for community service,” says Fifth Third Bank Vice President of Marketing Jack Riley. “We encourage employee volunteerism in our communities year round and now, with the Red Wings and S.H.O.T.S., we can incent high school-age students to learn about the value of service in their communities as well.”

Detroit Red Wings radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal will serve as ambassador for the program, and share in a judging panel which includes Fox Sports Detroit’s Trevor Thompson, 97.9 WJLB’s Dr. Darrius, Pat Caputo of 97.1 The Ticket, as well as Fifth Third Bank and Detroit Red Wings executives. Student community service initiatives will be based and judged on three criterions: project creativity, community reach and community impact.

“High school students have a lot of great ideas,” says Kal. “They have the ability through this program to reach out and get involved in a variety of different projects. I look forward to working with them and seeing how their efforts create an impact in the community.”

The S.H.O.T.S. program is available to students in grades 9-12 that attend high school in Genesee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Shiawassee, Washtenaw or Wayne County. Past projects have included volunteering at a local soup kitchen, organizing a community service event, helping a nearby family in need and several other charitable operations.

Student groups may participate in as many or as few projects as they prefer, such as one five-month-long project, one project each month, multiple projects each month, or any other combination.
