Howard takes aim at win No. 100
DETROIT – When the Red Wings and Maple Leafs tussle this Saturday for the 276th time in series history, goalie Jimmy Howard will be looking to make history of his own.

Not only will he be making his first career start at Air Canada Centre, he'll be looking to become the ninth goaltender to register 100 wins in franchise history. If he’s fortunate to secure the win, Howard will be the fourth fastest Wings’ goalie to reach the NHL milestone, doing so in 170 career games, behind Chris Osgood (158), Manny Legace (163) and hall-of-famer Terry Sawchuk (165).

The other goalies to win at least 100 games in a Wings’ uniform are Harry Lumley (317), Roger Crozier (163), Tim Cheveldae (128), Greg Stefan (115), and Dominik Hasek (114).

Here’s a look at the three Wings’ goalies (and Howard) to reach 100 wins the fastest:

165 Games

Terry Sawchuk played 21 seasons with five different NHL teams, including three stints with the Red Wings, which covered 14 seasons. Has a Red Wing, he posted a 352-244-130 record with a 2.46 goals-against and 85 shutouts. Sawchuk got his 100th victory in a 10-1 win over Chicago at Olympia Stadium on Nov. 22, 1952.

158 Games

Chris Osgood retired with 401 victories, placing him 10th all-time in NHL history. A third-round draft pick in 1991, Osgood played 14 seasons for the Wings, compiling a 317-149-46 mark with a 2.49 GAA and 39 shutouts. He collected win No. 100 near his Alberta home with a 3-1 season-opening victory over the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome on Oct. 1, 1997.

163 Games

Now playing for Springfield, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ AHL affiliate, Manny Legace played parts of six seasons with the Red Wings, earning a 112-34-16 record with a stunning 2.18 GAA and 13 shutouts. He had his best statistical season in 2005-06 when he won 37 games and earned career win No. 100 in a 6-0 win over the Nashville Predators at Joe Louis Arena on Feb. 8, 2006.

170 Games?

Jimmy Howard has been on a roll this season, enjoying his best goals-against season of his career. At the halfway point of the season, Howard, a second-round pick in the 2003 draft, is on pace to win 48 games. His first career win came in a 5-2 decision over the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center on Nov. 28, 2005. The Maple Leafs are the only team that Howard does not have a decision against. In fact, he’s faced them just once, and Saturday will be his first game at Air Canada Centre.
