The Red Wings have dodged the injury bullet all season.

But Tuesday night the league’s fourth ranked team will have to play the Columbus Blue Jackets without four players, including superstars Nicklas Lidstrom (ankle) and Pavel Datsyuk (knee).

Lidstrom suffered an injury during the second period of Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Colorado when he was struck in the ankle by a puck that had been fired into the defensive zone.

The Wings’ captain went for an X-ray Saturday after the game, and again Monday morning just to make sure there wasn’t a fracture.

“I took a puck to the ankle and it was very swollen (Sunday), but it’s gotten a little better,” Lidstrom said Monday. “The puck came hard around and kind of skipped and hit me right in the ankle. … It’s still not good enough to skate on it.”

Lidstrom knew right away that something was wrong with the ankle. He usually unties his skates during the first and second intermissions, but he knew if he did that Saturday he wasn’t getting his foot back into the skate boot.

“I kept it on and waited until after the game and then it got real sore,” he said.

The Wings will already be without Datsyuk, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last week and defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (fractured wrist) and Kyle Quincey (groin), both injured in Saturday’s home loss to the Avalanche.

Ericsson was struck by a shot that clipped his left wrist early in the second period. It’s expected that he’ll miss a month. Quincey pulled a groin during the first period Saturday and went to Detroit Medical Center for tests on Monday.

“I battled through the game Saturday,” Quincey said. “It happens a lot when you have pain and it usually eases and you’re good to go the next day, and it just didn’t. And again today you wake-up, hopefully it’s gone, and it’s not. Hopefully it goes away sooner than later.”

On Monday, shortly after veteran Mike Commodore had been traded to Tampa Bay, the Wings announced that they had recalled rookie defenseman Brendan Smith from Grand Rapids. Fewer than 24 hours later, the club called up veteran defenseman Doug Janik from the Griffins.

This season, the 31-year-old Janik has seven goals and 18 assists with a team-best plus-16 rating in 53 games.
