Six acquired at 2012 NHL Entry Draft

PITTSBURGH – The final six rounds of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft were staged at CONSOL Energy Center on Saturday, with the 11-time Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings adding three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender to their stable of prospects. Detroit chose two European players and four North Americans with their six entry draft selections this year.

With their first pick in the draft, the Red Wings selected Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) winger Martin Frk in the second round (49th overall). Frk has tallied 79 points (38G-41A) in 96 games for the Mooseheads since Halifax selected him in the opening round (3rd overall) of the 2010 CHL Import Draft. The 6’0”, 198-lb. forward also represented his native Czech Republic at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championships, recording 3G-3A-6P in six appearances.

Detroit selected a pair of OHL players with their next two picks, acquiring Saginaw Spirit goalie Jake Paterson in the third round (80th overall) and London Knights forward Andreas Athanasiou in the fourth round (110th overall). In the fifth round, the Red Wings chose their first defenseman of the day, selecting Lincoln Stars (USHL) blue-liner Mike McKee 140th overall. McKee is committed to Western Michigan University for the 2012-13 NCAA season.

The Red Wings wrapped up their 2012 entry draft by selecting Toronto Lakeshore Patriots (OJHL) rearguard James De Haas in the sixth round (170th overall) and Östersunds IK (SWE J20, Div I) forward Rasmus Bodin in the seventh (200th overall). Several players selected by Detroit today will take part in the team’s Summer Development Camp, scheduled to take place from July 7-13 in Traverse City, MI at Centre Ice Arena. A full roster and itinerary for this camp will be announced soon.
