Winter Classic, Central rivals highlight national TV games
DETROIT – The NHL has announced the television schedules for the upcoming season for their national partners NBC, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TSN, TSN2, RDS and the NHL Network.
Besides the Winter Classic between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium on the University of Michigan campus – which will air on NBC in the United States, CBC in Canada, and French-language RDS – the league has scheduled 31 other nationally televised games for the Wings across the U.S. and/or Canada.
Twelve Wings’ games against Central Division opponents, including the season-opener against the Nashville Predators on Oct. 12 – and all six games against the Chicago Blackhawks – will air nationally in the U.S.
Detroit will be featured in 12 games that will air in both countries, beginning Oct. 16 when NBCSN and TSN2 will show the Wings at Buffalo. The Wings will also be featured on CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada with games in Winnipeg (Oct. 27), Ottawa (Dec. 29) and Vancouver (March 16).
NBC and NBCSN, who are entering the second season of a 10-year agreement, the largest media rights contract in NHL history, have 15 Wings’ games on their schedule, including marquee match-ups against Pittsburgh (Nov. 19), Boston (Dec. 10), Montreal (Jan. 30) and the New York Rangers (March 20).
The NHL Network will air eight Wings’ games in the U.S., including a showdown against the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena on Nov. 29.
Fox Sports Detroit, the Wings' local television partner, will announce the games which they plan to carry at a later time.
