Detroit launches Red Wings for Reading program

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings announced today a new program - Red Wings for Reading - to encourage Michigan elementary students to read as children head back to school this fall.

To enter, any Michigan elementary student between kindergarten and fifth grade needs to read three select popular children’s books for their respective age group and then have their guardian submit an entry form, which is available at along with official contest rules, confirming that the child read those three books. Each participating student will receive a Red Wings reading fan pack, which includes a limited edition bookmark, a temporary Red Wings tattoo and a personalized certificate congratulating the student on reading all three books.

Students, whose guardians have submitted entries, will have the chance to win two upper bowl tickets to an upcoming regular season game, a pair of meal vouchers and a goody bag with promotional items.

Kindergarten - Second Grade Books: Third - Fifth Grade Books:
  1. "The Little Engine That Could" by Watty Piper
  2. "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Suess
  3. "The Magic School Bus" by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen
  1. "Mr. Popper's Penguins" by Richard Atwater
  2. "Pippi Longstocking" by Astrid Lindgren
  3. "James and the Giant Peach" by Roald Dahl

The Red Wings will invite 50 students from the Michigan elementary school with the most entries each month to attend a team practice at Joe Louis Arena. In addition, a Red Wings special guest will read to a classroom in March at the school with the most overall number of entries between Sept. 1, 2012, and Feb. 1, 2013. If the school with the most cumulative entries is more than 30 minutes away from Joe Louis Arena, the class will be invited to come down to the Joe to watch practice and hear the Red Wings special guest read to them afterwards.
