DETROIT – Down three defensemen before they opened the 2013 season at home, it was necessary for the Red Wings to go out and sign veteran journeyman Kent Huskins in January.

Huskins was a solid alternative when the Wings’ defensive cupboard was decimated with injuries. But now, with the defensive corps nearly back to full-strength – plus the signing of highly-touted undrafted free agent defenseman Danny DeKeyser on Saturday – there was no longer room on the Wings’ roster for Huskins.

The move clears room on the Red Wings' 23-man roster to activate DeKeyser, who grew-up in metro Detroit and is a 2008 graduate of De La Salle Collegiate, an all-boys Catholic high school in suburban Warren.

Saturday afternoon, after the Wings practiced before a special season-ticket hold audience at Joe Louis Arena, Huskins learned that he was on the move again. The Wings traded the 33-year-old defenseman to the Philadelphia Flyers for a conditional seventh round pick in the 2014 entry draft.

“It’s obviously been a unique season all around,” he said. “I was happy for the opportunity here and got to play some games, I guess, after having some injury problems over the last few years to just kind of get back playing and get another crack at it.”

An ankle injury forced Huskins to miss much of the 2011-12 season, his first with the St. Louis Blues. Now he’s off to his fifth club in seven NHL seasons.

“I’m excited to be going to Philadelphia and get a chance to play again,” he said. “For me, it’s just an opportunity to go play some games and try to contribute to a new team and see where it goes. I mean, if anything over the last few years I’ve learned not to look too far ahead and just concentrate on what you’re doing because you can kind of drive yourself nuts thinking about scenarios and everything that could happen down the road. I’m just happy to be getting in some games here.”

Before arriving in Detroit, Huskins was on a professional tryout with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League. He played in 11 games for the Wings and averaged more than 15-minutes of ice-time.

News of the trade was made stranger for Huskins, whose parents arrived from Ottawa, Ontario on Saturday.

“It’s a memorable day for sure,” Huskins said. “I’ve had a few of those lately, but it’s all part of being a pro.”
