Wings sign Andersson to a two-year deal

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has signed restricted free agent forward Joakim Andersson to a two-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Andersson, 24, was selected by Detroit in the third round (88th overall) of the 2007 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The 6-2, 198-lb. center skated in 38 games for the Red Wings in 2012-13, collecting eight points (3-5-8) and eight PIM. He recorded his first career NHL goal and assist in the same game, a 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Feb. 15 at Joe Louis Arena. Just nine days later on Feb. 24, Andersson notched his first career multi-goal game in an 8-3 rout of the Vancouver Canucks at The Joe. The Munkedal, Sweden, native also appeared in all 14 postseason contests for Detroit this year, registering five points (1-4-5) and 10 PIM.

Andersson spent parts of four seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, including 36 games in 2012-13, before being recalled to Detroit for the final 38 games of the regular season. In 153 career games with Grand Rapids, he posted 74 points (28-46-74) and 66 PIM.
