DETROIT – It was only fitting to play the Irish Jig when Brendan Shanahan stepped on the ice Thursday at Joe Louis Arena.

“I loved it,” Shanahan said. “Secretly I was hoping they would play it when I came out here and it was great to hear it.”

The former Red Wing returned to The Joe for Brendan Shanahan Night in honor of his recent induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Shanahan spent nine of his 22-year NHL career in Detroit, winning all three of his Stanley Cups with the Red Wings. The forward appeared in eight all-star games, recorded 656 goals and 1,354 points in 1,524 games, and is the only player in NHL history with over 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.

Shanahan is also a member of the prestigious Triple Gold Club having won a gold medal at the 1994 World Championships, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the Stanley Cup with the Wings.

The Mimico, Ontario, native was inducted into the Hall of Fame four years after retiring from the NHL.

“That was a pretty special event,” Shanahan said of his enshrinement. “I knew it was going to be a great weekend but it even exceeded my expectations.”

Brendan Shanahan Night at The Joe included a poster giveaway, the ceremonial puck drop with his family, a replay of his induction speech and a concourse display from the Hockey Hall of Fame, including the King Clancy Memorial Trophy Shanahan earned for his humanitarian efforts.
