DETROIT – An annual tradition will return to Joe Louis Arena on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m., when the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans take the ice for the return of ‘College Hockey in the D.’ Tickets for the contest are on sale now, comprising one of two college hockey events hosted by Olympia Entertainment this year, along with the 49th Annual Great Lakes Invitational.

“We are pleased to continue a longstanding tradition with Michigan State by playing at Joe Louis Arena this season,” said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. “With three Big Ten points on the line this year, it will be an exciting event for fans of college hockey and the city of Detroit.”

“It’s always exciting for our team and fans to play on an NHL stage at Joe Louis Arena,” said Tom Anastos, head coach of Michigan State. “We are very appreciative of our longstanding relationship with the Ilitches and their family of companies and look forward to being a part of ‘College Hockey in the D’ for many years to come.”

This marks the first season that the teams will meet at JLA as members of the Big Ten, having joined the newly-formed conference from the CCHA following last season. The contest also marks the only ‘College Hockey in the D’ game at JLA this season, as the Great Lakes Invitational (GLI), which features Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech (WCHA) and Western Michigan (NCHC), will be held at Comerica Park as part of the 2013 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival™.

The four-team GLI will begin on Friday, Dec. 27 as Michigan State takes on Michigan Tech at 3:30 p.m. and Michigan battles Western Michigan at 7 p.m. The winners of those games advance to the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m., while the other two will clash in the consolation game at 3:30 p.m. on the same day.

Fans will get a chance to see the stars of tomorrow when the teams hit the ice at Joe Louis Arena, as Michigan has 12 NHL draft picks on its roster, while Michigan State has five. Michigan currently stands second in the Big Ten with a 2-0 conference record (10-2-2 overall), and Michigan State is fourth at 1-1 (5-9-1 overall). Additionally, for both the Jan. 23 meeting and the GLI, the Wolverines and Spartans will sport throwback jerseys.

Michigan and Michigan State have met at least once per season at JLA since 1990, with the Wolverines holding a slight series advantage with a 13-9-4 record. Michigan also took both meetings in Detroit last year, defeating Michigan State in the GLI on Dec. 30 and again on Feb. 2 by identical 5-2 margins.

Tickets for both of the 2013-14 ‘College Hockey in the D’ events are available for purchase at the JLA Box Office (313-471-7575), all Ticketmaster (800-745-3000) outlets, and online at OlympiaEntertainment.com.
