GLI championship headlines Day 2 fun

DETROIT – Day 2 of Detroit’s hockey celebration kicks off this afternoon when the 2013 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival opens to the public at 1 p.m.

The event covers more than 100,000 square feet outside of Comerica Park with all things hockey and all things fun. The Winter Festival will be held every day through New Year’s Eve in conjunction with the 2014 NHL Winter Classic, taking place at Michigan Stadium.
There’s plenty to see and do today throughout the Coke Zero Fan Zone with entertainment on both the Red Wings Experience Stage as well as the Molson Hockey House Stage.

Also, the 49th annual Great Lakes Invitational concludes today when Western Michigan (8-8-3) takes on Michigan Tech (6-9-6) in the 8 p.m. championship contest. The Huskies are seeking their second straight GLI championship and 11th overall. Meanwhile, it’s been 27 years since WMU won its only GLI title. The Broncos and their former standout defenseman Danny DeKeyser lost 4-0 in last December’s championship at Joe Louis Arena.

The GLI consolation game between No. 3 Michigan (10-3-2) and Michigan State (5-9-2) will precede the title game at 4:30 p.m.

Despite the delayed times for the GLI games, the Fan Zone will maintain its original hours today and is open from 1-10 p.m. The festivities are free for those with tickets to the game and $5 for those who do not have tickets.
