\u2018College Hockey in the D\u2019 is Jan. 23

DETROIT – The fierce in-state rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State University Spartans continues at Joe Louis Arena on Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the second leg of the ‘College Hockey in the D’ series hosted by Olympia Entertainment.

The Spartans claimed a 3-0 victory over the Wolverines in the consolation game of the 49th annual Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 28, which was held outdoors at Comerica Park as a part of the 2013 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival. The meeting was the 19th between the two clubs in GLI history, with Michigan holding a slight 10-8-1 advantage.

This month's game marks the first time the rivals will meet at JLA as members of the Big Ten Conference, having joined the newly-formed hockey alignment from the CCHA following last season. The contest also marks the only ‘College Hockey in the D’ game at JLA this season.

“We are pleased to continue a longstanding tradition with Michigan State by playing at Joe Louis Arena this season,” said Michigan coach Red Berenson. “With three Big Ten points on the line this year, it will be an exciting event for fans of college hockey and the city of Detroit.”

“It’s always exciting for our team and fans to play on an NHL stage at Joe Louis Arena,” said Tom Anastos, head coach of Michigan State. “We are very appreciative of our longstanding relationship with the Ilitches and their family of companies and look forward to being a part of ‘College Hockey in the D’ for many years to come.”

Fans will get a chance to see the stars of tomorrow when the teams hit the ice at Joe Louis Arena, as Michigan has 12 NHL draft picks on its roster, while Michigan State has five. Michigan currently sits in a tie for second place in the Big Ten with a 2-0 conference record (10-4-2 overall), while Michigan State is fourth at 1-1 (6-9-2 overall). Additionally, the Wolverines and Spartans will don throwback jerseys for the Jan. 23 meeting at Joe Louis Arena.

Michigan and Michigan State have met at least once per season at JLA since 1990, with the Wolverines holding the series advantage with a 13-9-4 record. Michigan also took both meetings in Detroit last year, defeating Michigan State in the GLI on Dec. 30 and again on Feb. 2 by identical 5-2 margins. Michigan also holds the edge in the all-time series against Michigan State (145-126-19).

Fans can take advantage of the Little Caesars Family Pack for the game, which features four tickets, four pizza slices and four soft drinks, starting at only $44.

Additional tickets for the ‘College Hockey in the D’ event on Jan. 23 are available for purchase at the JLA Box Office (313.471.7575), all Ticketmaster (800.745.3000) outlets, and online at
