DETROIT Gustav Nyquist scored a goal in each of the Red Wings four games last week, earning the young forward recognition as the NHL’s Second Star of the week.

Nyquist produced four goals and two assists with a plus-3 rating to help the Red Wings pick up five out of a possible eight points and move the club into the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Nyquist is on a five-game point streak, registering four goals and seven points. Previously to his current streak, the 24-year-old Swede was held to one goal in 17 games.

But lately, Nyquist has played fast and with a lot of skill on the team’s top line with center Henrik Zetterberg and forward Justin Abdelkader. Though Zetterberg was a late scratch Sunday, Nyquist didn’t miss a beat against the Panthers.

“He’s been playing with more energy,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

Nyquist scored the Wings’ lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues last Monday. He followed that up with back to back two-point performances, collecting a goal and an assist in a 5-4 shootout victory over Chicago on Wednesday, and a 4-1 win over Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Nyquist finished the week by scoring his ninth goal of the season in a 5-4 shootout loss to Florida on Sunday.

Nyquist, who has played parts of three seasons with the Red Wings, has produced career-highs for goals (9), assists (8), game-winning goals (2) and points (17) in 27 games this season.

Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen was named First Star, and Carolina defenseman Andrej Sekera earned Third Star recognition.

Nyquist is the first Red Wings’ player to score in four consecutive games since Pavel Datsyuk scored in five straight games last season. Steve Yzerman holds the franchise goal-streak record having scored in nine straight games in the 1991-92 season.
