Red Wings recall four from Griffins

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled forwards Cory Emmerton, Riley Sheahan and Teemu Pulkkinen and defenseman Adam Almquist from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Emmerton, 25, has appeared in 36 games with Grand Rapids this season, recording 31 points (11-20-31), a plus-11 rating and 12 penalty minutes. A native of St. Thomas, Ontario, he has also skated in 11 games with the Red Wings, notching two points (0-2-2) and four penalty minutes. In 132 career NHL games, Emmerton has tallied 21 points (12-9-21) and 22 penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 191-lb., forward has spent parts of five seasons with the Griffins, totaling 142 points (45-97-142) and 78 penalty minutes in 253 career AHL games.

Sheahan, 22, has split his second professional season between Detroit and Grand Rapids, registering 11 points (3-8-11) in 18 NHL games and 18 points (8-10-18) in 30 AHL contests. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native helped the Griffins win their first-ever Calder Cup in 2012-13, notching 36 points (16-20-36) in 72 regular-season games. He also tied for the AHL rookie lead in the postseason with 16 points (3-13-16) in 24 games during Grand Rapids’ championship run.

Pulkkinen, 22, leads the Griffins and is tied for 15th in the AHL with 42 points (19-23-42) in 51 games this season. The Vantaa, Finland, native is in his first full season in North America but appeared briefly with the Griffins last year after his season in Finland concluded, recording one assist in two regular-season games and five points (3-2-5) in 14 postseason contests. A third-year pro, Pulkkinen has also skated in 185 career games with Jokerit of Finland’s SM-Liiga, totaling 128 points (49-79-128). He was named the league’s rookie of the year in 2010-11.

Almquist, 22, ranks second on Grand Rapids and sixth among AHL defensemen with 33 points (2-31-33) in 48 games. A native of Huskvarna, Sweden, Almquist made his NHL debut with Detroit on Nov. 4 at Winnipeg and scored his first NHL goal the following game on Nov. 7 versus Dallas. The 5-foot-11, 174-lb., blueliner has surpassed his offensive totals as an AHL rookie in 2012-13, when he recorded 31 points (10-21-31) in 68 games with the Griffins. He also picked up 10 points (3-7-10) in 21 games during the team’s Calder Cup run.
