Detroit recalls defenseman Ryan Sproul
First-year pro is Grand Rapids’ top rookie scorer with 24 points in 53 games
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Ryan Sproul from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Sproul, 21, leads all Griffins’ rookies and sits second among AHL rookie blueliners with 24 points (8-16-24) in 53 games. He is also tied for fifth on the team with four power-play tallies and ranks fourth with 112 shots on goal. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Sproul played 172 games with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 2010-13, recording 153 points (57-96-153) and 134 penalty minutes. He led all OHL defensemen in scoring last season, earning the league’s Max Kaminsky Trophy as most outstanding defenseman as well as the CHL Defenseman of the Year award. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound defenseman was originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (55th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
