DETROIT – Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson has undergone surgery on the middle finger of his left hand today.

Surgery was required to stabilize the fractured finger and repair a partially torn tendon. Ericsson is expected to be out of Detroit’s lineup for the next 4-6 weeks.

When asked early Wednesday about Ericsson’s status and how long he might remain out of the lineup, coach Mike Babcock would only say, “Not playing tomorrow I know that. How long does a broken finger take?”

Ericsson has missed 20 games this season with a separated shoulder and two broken ribs. He has produced a goal and 11 points with a plus-2 rating in 48 games this season.

He was injured during the second period of Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ericsson joins a growing list of wounded Red Wings that includes captain Henrik Zetterberg (back surgery), centers Pavel Datsyuk (knee), Stephen Weiss (sports hernia), Darren Helm (concussion), Joakim Andersson (foot), goalie Jonas Gustavsson (groin), and forwards Tomas Jurco (rib), Daniel Cleary (knee) and Mikael Samuelsson (shoulder).

“We’ve had actually lucked out for a while on the blue line,” defenseman Brian Lashoff said. “Not having E is going to be tough. It’s just kind of strange how it’s been happening all year and now these last couple of games guys are just going down. We just have to rally as a group back there and makeup for the minutes that E won’t be playing.”
