By The Numbers: Daniel Cleary

By The Numbers will highlight the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments in the 2013-14 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. This week we focus on forward Daniel Cleary.

71

The third player to wear the jersey number – the fifth to don a 70-series numeral – in Red Wings history. Though he’s played nine seasons in Detroit, last season was his first with the new number after he granted his old No. 11 to Daniel Alfredsson. Forward Wendel Clark (1998-99) and defenseman Jiri Slegr (2001-02) also wore 71.

Fighting major in the past four seasons. Last season, he and Sharks tough guy Scott Hannan dropped the gloves in San Jose on Jan. 9 There must be something about the Sharks that gets Cleary revved up as his previous bout came four years to the day that he fought Devon Setoguchi.

Regular-season games missed down the stretch after he suffered an allergic reaction to an injected painkiller in one of his knees. He missed one other game during the season when he was a healthy scratch against Winnipeg on Nov. 12.

The number of teeth he lost after he was struck by a puck at Florida on Dec. 28. Three days later he visited a Detroit area dentist for repairs that took approximately 90 minutes. By his own account, he has only 12 of his original teeth left.

23

Career number of game-winnings he has after his second-period goal – which was also his first of the 2013-14 season – helped the Red Wings claim a 3-2 victory at Boston on Oct. 14. Only Henrik Zetterberg (56), Pavel Datsyuk (45) and Johan Franzen (41) have more GWG among active Red Wings.

 31

Total minutes accumulated in the penalty box on 13 infractions during 52 regular-season games, which is the most for him in the past four full NHL seasons. The majority of his minor penalties were for tripping (three) and goaltender interference (two).
