By The Numbers: Justin Abdelkader

By The Numbers will highlight the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments in the 2013-14 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. This week we focus on forward Justin Abdelkader

28

Not since his rookie season with the Grand Rapids Griffins (2008-09) has he produced so many points, collecting 10 goals and 18 assists last season with the Red Wings.

172

Led the Red Wings in hits, which ranked No. 59 in the league paced by New York Islanders forward Matt Martin, who dished out 359 hits for a 4.54 hits/game average through 70 regular-season games. Abdelkader has led the Wings in hits in three of the past four seasons.

147

Set a single-season career high for shots on goal averaging 2.1 shots per game. He had a season high six SOG twice at Philadelphia (Jan. 28) and at Tampa Bay (Feb. 8).

31

Represents his career low for minutes served in the penalty box in a single season. He was sent off the ice 14 times for 13 minor infractions and one major for his fight with Nashville’s Mike Fisher on Dec. 30.

1

Is the loneliest number but in Abdelkader’s case it also represents his only power-play goal in 327 career NHL games. The PPG was scored into an empty net with 15 seconds left in Detroit’s 2-0 home win over Vancouver on Feb. 3.

 3

The most game-winning goals he produced since his final season at Michigan State in 2007-08. Had a GWG in each period – in the first period at St. Louis (Apr. 13), in the second vs. Vancouver (Feb. 3) and in the third at Calgary (Nov. 1).
