Previewing the East: New Jersey
With the departure of legendary Martin Broduer, the No. 1 job between the pipes in New Jersey now belongs to Cory Schneider, whom the Devils signed to a seven-year, $42 million contract extension in July. Schneider was never asked to be a workhorse before last season when he produced a 16-15-12 record with a 1.97 goals-against average.

PLAYER TO WATCH: With the departure of legendary Martin Broduer, the No. 1 job between the pipes in New Jersey now belongs to Cory Schneider, whom the Devils signed to a seven-year, $42 million contract extension in July. Schneider was never asked to be a workhorse before last season when he produced a 16-15-12 record with a 1.97 goals-against average. But now Schneider will be counted upon to help end the Devils’ two-year playoff drought.

SEASON SCOPE: The Devils had to upgrade their offense in the off-season, and they think they did that with the free-agent signings of Mike Cammalleri and Marty Havlat. It remains unseen whether Cammalleri (26 goals, 45 points) will play with center Travis Zajac and perennial all-star Jaromir Jagr, but if he does it will give the Devils a potent top line. For the Devils, the Havlat signing is a low-risk deal (one year at $1.5 million), but if the 13-season veteran could find a new comfort level in New Jersey with Czech friends, Patrik Elias and Marek Zidlicky. Havlat also knows Jagr well, and was teammates with Ryane Clowe in San Jose.

The Devils also re-signed Stephen Gionta, and Steve Bernier, who can be expected to produce the same kind of numbers – 11 and 12 points, respectively – that they did as fourth-liners last season.
