DETROIT – Considered to be one of the finest goaltenders in the history of the game, Dominik Hasek, who won two Stanley Cup titles with the Red Wings, will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame this fall with the six-member Class of 2014.

“After I retired I really began to appreciate what the game did for me,” Hasek said in a press release. “My goal was just to make the NHL, and achieving this recognition is far beyond what I could have imagined.”

Hasek, with his unorthodox style, became one of the greatest goaltenders in the game's history. He won the Vezina Trophy a remarkable six times and is the only goaltender to ever win the Hart Trophy in consecutive seasons (1997-98). He won the William Jennings Trophy three times, the Ted Lindsay Award twice, and played in six NHL All-Star Games. He won the Stanley Cup as the starter in 2002 and as a backup in 2008.

Hasek played in the Olympics four times, winning the gold medal with the Czech Republic at the 1998 Nagano Games, the first to include NHL players. He also won a bronze in 2006.

In 708 games with Chicago, Buffalo, the Red Wings and Ottawa, he collected 389 wins, 11th all-time, and 81 shutouts, sixth on the all-time list.

Three other players, All-Star forwards Peter Forsberg and Mike Modano, and defenseman Rob Blake are also headed into the Hall of Fame, along with coach Pat Burns, posthumously, and referee Bill McCreary.

Modano, who was born and raised in metro Detroit, played his final NHL season with the Red Wings, appearing in 40 games while producing four goals and 15 points in 2010-11. He played 21 seasons for the Dallas Stars franchise, beginning with the Minnesota North Stars. Modano holds the NHL record for most goals (561) and points (1,374) by an American-born player.

“When I played I always hoped that I could make an impact on the game, both on and off the ice, and this honor recognizes that,” Modano said in a release. “I love this game and as an American born player, I owe a lot to the people in Prince Albert who helped me take my game to the next level.”

It’s the seventh straight year that the Red Wings have had a representative receive nomination into the Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be honored at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Nov. 17, along with USA Today reporter and metro Detroit native Kevin Allen, the winner of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism, and Chicago Blackhawks play-by-play announcer Pat Foley, who will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting.
