Previewing the East: Ottawa
DETROIT – Ready for some hockey?

Sure you are.

The Red Wings don’t open training camp until Sept. 19 in Traverse City, but over the next eight weeks DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose will preview the 15 teams in the Eastern Conference, including the Red Wings’ Atlantic Division rivals in Boston, Tampa Bay, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Florida and Buffalo. This week it's the Ottawa Senators:

2014-15 OUTLOOK

Regular-Season Games vs. Red Wings: Nov. 4 (at OTT); Nov. 24 (at DET); Dec. 27 (at OTT); Mar. 31 (at DET).

ARRIVALS:  Forwards Alex Chiasson, David Legwand and Carter Camper; and defenseman Aaron Johnson.

DEPARTURES:  Forwards Jason Spezza, Ales Hemsky and Matt Kassian.

Turris
PLAYER TO WATCH: Last season was a career year for Kyle Turris, who will turn 24 years old this Thursday. The former first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes will be asked to produce more of the same in an attempt to pick up the goal scoring loss with the departure of Jason Spezza. Turris collected career bests in goals (26), assists (32), points (58), plus/minus rating (+22) and game-winning goals (5). More than likely he’ll the top candidate to fill the vacancy in the middle the Sens’ No. 1 forward line with Bobby Ryan and Clarke MacArthur on the wings.

SEASON SCOPE: In 13 months, the Senators lost the two highest scoring players in franchise history with the departure of Daniel Alfredsson and Spezza. Since they didn’t make that much of a wave in free agency – aside from the signing of Detroit area native David Legwand – the Sens will need to take more a scoring by committee approach to the upcoming season.

Four Sens – goalie Craig Anderson, defenseman Marc Methot, and forwards MacArthur and Ryan – are entering the final season of their contracts. Legwand and Alex Chiasson, who was part of the trade that sent Spezza to Dallas, need to have rebound seasons. Legwand had just four goals in 21 games for the Red Wings after the trade deadline. Meanwhile, Chiasson had a tremendous start to his first NHL season, scoring five goals in his first five games. He finished eighth on the Stars with 13 goals in 79 games.
