Red Wings select forward Dylan Larkin with first round draft choice

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today selected center Dylan Larkin in the first round (15th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

A native of Waterford, Mich., Larkin has spent the last two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. In 60 games during the 2013-14 season, he ranked second on the Under-18 team with 31 goals among his 56 points (31-25-56). He also posted 56 penalty minutes and a plus-23 rating. Additionally, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward served as an alternate captain for the United States at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship, tallying four points (2-2-4) in six contests. Larkin also skated with the NTDP in 2013-14, totaling 27 points (13-14-27) and 54 penalty minutes in 55 games.

Larkin, 17, is slated to attend the University of Michigan this fall. Prior to skating for the U.S. National Team Development Program, he was a member of the Belle Tire Hockey Club in Detroit, captaining the team to a national championship in 2011. He also skated internationally for his country at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, earning a bronze medal after posting seven points (2-5-7) in six games.
