The Red Wings did not qualify forwards Willie Coetzee, Cory Emmerton and Trevor Parkes and defensemen Gleason Fournier and Max Nicastro, thus relinquishing their rights.
Almquist and Emmerton will play in the KHL next season, signing with Russian teams Severstal Cherepovets and HK Sochi, respectively.
Like several up-and-coming young prospects, Sheahan was a benefactor of Detroit’s abundance of injuries. He was recalled from Grand Rapids in mid-December and produced some offense while centering a line between Tatar and Gustav Nyquist.
The 22-year-old Sheahan, who was the Wings’ first-round draft pick (No. 21 overall) in 2010, collected nine goals and 24 points in 42 games. He had no points in the first-round playoff series against Boston.
