Wings sign another Hobey Baker winner

DETROIT – The Red Wings have never had a Hobey Baker Award winner in their organization. That is until Tuesday.

With the late-afternoon signing of unrestricted free agent Andy Miele, the Red Wings have added forward depth with a pair of unrestricted free agents, who were once recognized as the best U.S. college players.

Miele, a Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., native, and Kevin Porter, of suburban Northville, Mich., won the Hobey Baker Award in 2011 and 2008, respectively. Porter also signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Red Wings on Tuesday. He won his Hobey Baker with the University of Michigan.

An undrafted rookie free agent signed by Phoenix in 2011, Miele spent the majority of his pro career with the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate in Portland, Maine, where he produced 35 goals and 107 points in 139 AHL games.

The 26-year-old Miele, who is 5-foot-9 and 175-pounds, appeared in 15 NHL games over three seasons with the Coyotes. Miele collected his NHL points last season, picking up two assists in the Coyotes’ 3-1 win over Los Angeles on Oct. 29.

As a senior at Miami University, Miele led the nation in scoring with 24 goals and 71 points in 39 games during the 2010-11 NCAA season.

The Red Wings now have six Michigan-born players in the organization, including last weekend’s first-round draft pick Dylan Larkin, of Waterford, Mich. The others are forwards Justin Abdelkader and Luke Glendening, and defenseman Danny DeKeyser.

Both Miele and Porter are expected to add organizational depth at the forward position and will likely play a role with the Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.
