Red Wings re-sign Callahan, Nestrasil

DETROIT – The Red Wings today announced that they have re-signed right wings Mitch Callahan and Andrej Nestrasil to one-year contracts. In accordance with club policy, additional details will not be disclosed.

Callahan, 22, paced Grand Rapids with a plus-23 rating last season and also finished among the Griffins’ leaders with 26 goals (2nd), 44 points (4th), seven power-play goals (T2nd) and 194 shots on goal (3rd). Originally drafted by the Red Wings in the sixth round (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL draft, Callahan made his NHL debut last season on March 25 at Columbus and logged 9:01 of ice time. The Whittier, Calif., native has skated in 189 games with Grand Rapids since 2011-12 and has tallied 73 points (43-30-73) and 247 penalty minutes. Callahan also helped the Griffins to a Calder Cup championship in 2012-13, notching 20 points (11-9-20) in 71 regular-season games and 11 points (6-5-11) in 24 postseason contests.

Prior to turning professional, Callahan appeared in 204 WHL games with the Kelowna Rockets from 2008-11, tallying 128 points (57-71-128) and 440 penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 195-pound, forward was also a member of the 2009 Kelowna squad that captured the WHL’s Ed Chynoweth Cup. Internationally, Callahan represented the U.S. at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., and helped Team USA to a bronze medal.

Nestrasil, 23, completed his third professional campaign with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins in 2013-14, enjoying a career-best 36 points (16-20-36) and 24 penalty minutes in 70 games played. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound, forward ranked among team leaders with 16 goals (T3rd), 20 assists (7th), 36 points (T5th), seven power-play goals (T2nd) and 115 shots (T8th). He also tied for fourth on the team with six points (4-2-6) in 10 postseason games. Prior to last season, he had tallied 10 points (6-4-10) in 50 games with the Griffins over two seasons (2011-13), while skating in one game during the team’s 2013 Calder Cup championship run.

A native of Prague, Czech Republic, Nestrasil was originally selected by Detroit in the third round (75th overall) of the 2009 NHL draft. He spent parts of his first two professional seasons with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, totaling 70 points (18-52-70) in 91 contests. Before his professional career, he appeared in 174 QMJHL games with the Victoriaville Tigres and Prince Edward Island Rocket, notching 178 points (57-121-178) and 147 penalty minutes. He also represented his country at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships and the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Championships, registering 14 points (4-10-14) in 18 games over the three tournaments.
