'Nine' is a great book with never before seen photos

The Red Wings and legendary Gordie Howe have released a great new book project: Nine: A Salute to Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe is a phenomenal new book produced by Olympia Entertainment that chronicles the extraordinary life acomplishments of Mr. Hockey.

Now you can relive his amazing career through pictures and the words of hall-of-famers, who played with him and against him. Through hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, and the words of more than 80 members of Hockey’s Hall of Fame, Nine: A Salute to Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe will evoke incredible memories of Mr. Hockey’s championship career for all hockey fans.

Here are a few quotes found in Nine: A Salute to Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe:

“Sure, I remember the first time I played against Gordie, I got an elbow in the face. He was just a great hockey player, he just wanted to win and that was part of the game. Everybody has his own way to play the game, and he was a little dirty, but just a great hockey player. I hated playing against him because he was too tough.”   Henri Richard

“My first year, 1965, I was with the Boston Bruins, and Gilles Marotte was a big, tough guy, who hit Gordie along the boards at the old Olympia. When you came out of the one corner at the Olympia there was a door, and Gordie went right through it. Marotte was a big kid, but he was a rookie. And about three shifts later, Marotte had a broken jaw. Somehow the old man got back at him. Gordie was the best, the king of the hill. What else can you say?"  Bernie Parent

“My first game, Gordie wanted to let the young kid know that he was still around. I made a pass and skated around the net and watched my pretty pass and he knocked me down. I can’t say I was surprised. I was just sitting there watching my pass. I had my head down and he drilled me. Surprised? No. I didn’t see him coming and it was a good lesson for me in this league. Later on, I had asked him about the hit, and in typical Gordie-fashion said, ‘It’s better to give than to receive.’ "  Bobby Orr

Howe won four Stanley Cups, six Hart Trophies, and six scoring titles. Following his playing days in Detroit, Howe was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972, but returned to hockey to play with his sons in the WHA and the NHL.

Famous for his fierce elbows, uncanny scoring ability and legendary charisma, Howe retired with 801 goals, 1,049 assists and 1,850 points — all NHL records at the time.

Nine: A Salute to Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe captures what Howe has meant to a storied franchise, teammates, a legion of loyal fans and the entire hockey world. The book is now available at Joe Louis Arena, Hockeytown Cafe and Hockeytown Authentics, next to the Troy Sports Arena, or by calling 1-800-WINGS-25. The book retails for $30.
