Goaltenders

Jimmy Howard
DOB: March 26, 1984 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio:
After refining his skills at the University of Maine, Howard is next in line to serve between the pipes for Hockeytown.  Detroit’s second round choice (64th overall) in 2003, will be standing tall between the pipes in Grand Rapids, waiting for his chance at the NHL level.  Howard played 100 minutes in the preseason with impressive numbers - a 94.7% save percentage and 1.20 goals against after giving up only two goals.

Daniel Larsson
DOB: Feb 7, 1986 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio:
After capturing top rookie and top goaltender awards in the Swedish Elite League, Larsson will adjust to North American hockey with the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.  Detroit has high hopes for their third round choice (92nd overall) of 2006 after such impressive showings overseas.

Tom McCollum
DOB: Dec 7, 1989 | Team: Guelph | League: OHL

Bio:
The Wings were fortunate to grab McCollum, the top-rated goaltender in this summer’s draft, at 30th overall in the first round.  McCollum, from Amherst, New York, will have plenty of time to develop behind Howard and Larsson.  He will stay with his OHL club in Guelph this season, but if he continues his impressive numbers in juniors, expect to see him in Grand Rapids or Detroit soon.

Left Wing

Justin Abdelkader
DOB: Feb 25, 1987 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio:
Abdelkader should be a familiar name for Michigan hockey fans.  The former MSU Spartan scored the game-winning goal in the 2007 National Championship.  The Red Wings second round pick (42nd overall) in 2005 then found himself on the NHL roster in time to win a Stanley Cup this summer.  He will continue to develop in Grand Rapids this season, but he’s on a short list of possible call-ups for the big league club.

Dick Axelsson
DOB: April 25, 1987 | Team: Djurgardens | League: SEL (Sweden)

Bio:
Axelsson, who was drafted in the second round (62nd overall) by the Red Wings in 2006, will continue to grow in his native Sweden.  He currently plays for Djurgardens of the Swedish Elite League, where he had 12 goals, 13 assists, and 44 penalty minutes in 47 SEL games last year.

Cory Emmerton
DOB: June 1, 1988 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio: Emmerton was the first pick the Wings made in the 2006 NHL Draft, taking him in the second round (41st overall).  After spending four years in the OHL, Emmerton will move to Grand Rapids for some tougher competition.  The Wings took a long look at him in the preseason, however, dressing him for six games.  Emmerton responded well, recording one goal and two assists, and an impressive plus-four overall.

Ville Leino
DOB: Oct 6, 1983 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio:
A star in the Finnish Elite League last season, Leino was one of the final cuts during the preseason.  The Wings signed him out of Jokerit Helsinki after recording 77 points in 55 games.  In the Wings’ preseason, he recorded three goals and three assists in eight games.  Leino will learn how to adapt to North American hockey in Grand Rapids this season.

Jan Mursak
DOB: Jan 20, 1988 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL
CLICK HERE to see Mursak's statistics

Bio: The Maribor, Slovenia native was selected by the Red Wings in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Draft (182nd overall).  After three seasons in the OHL, Mursak will continue to develop with the Griffins in the AHL.  Mursak skated in five games in the preseason, mostly on the top two lines, and tallied one goal with a plus-two rating.

Anton Axelsson
DOB: Jan 16, 1986 | Team: Timra | League: Swedish Elite

Bio: Axelsson, of Ytterby, Sweden, was the Red Wings’ sixth round choice (192nd overall) in 2004.  He will continue to develop in the SEL, skating with Timra IK.  Last season, he had ten goals and ten assists in 54 SEL games.

Johan Ryno
DOB: June 5, 1986 | Team: Djurgardens | League: Swedish Elite

Bio:
The Orebro, Sweden native was taken in the fifth round by the Wings in 2005 (137th overall).  Last season, Ryno split the season between Djurgardens of the SEL and Grand Rapids, accumulating three goals and four assists in 12 games with the Griffins.  On October 27, redwingscentral.com reported that Ryno re-injured his leg from an August injury, and could be out until January.

Center

Darren Helm
DOB: Jan 21, 1987 | Team: Red Wings | League: NHL
CLICK HERE to see Helm's NHL statistics

CLICK HERE to see Helm's AHL statistics

Bio: Wings fans should be pretty familiar with Helm by now; after all, he worked his way into 18 playoff games with the Wings last spring, capped off with a Stanley Cup victory.  The only problem for the Wings’ fifth round choice (132nd overall) of 2005 is team depth – Helm will have trouble cracking such a deep roster.  As of November 30, he’s played in seven games with the Red Wings, but it is likely that he will be splitting time between Detroit and Grand Rapids.  Needless to say, the future is bright for one of Detroit’s late-round draft gems.

Randy Cameron
DOB: Jan 28, 1989 | Team: Moncton | League: QMJHL
CLICK HERE to see Cameron's statistics

Bio: Cameron was selected by the Red Wings in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.  He will continue to skate in the Quebec Major Juniors, where he has recorded 39 points in both his freshman (2006-07) and sophomore (2007-08) campaigns with the Moncton Wildcats.

Zack Torquato
DOB: June 8, 1989 | Team: Erie | League: OHL

Bio: The Sault Ste Marie, Canada, native was drafted by Detroit in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.  After spending one season with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL, he moved to the Erie Otters, where he will play again this year.  Last season, 2007-08, Torquato had 67 points in 66 games.  He also saw some time with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, playing in 11 games and recording one goal.

Brent Raedeke
DOB: May 29, 1990 | Team: Edmonton | League: WHL

Bio:
Raedeke, of Regina, Saskatchewan, went undrafted, but that doesn’t mean the Wings weren’t interested.  They signed the Edmonton Oil King center to an entry-level deal.  Raedeke will continue to work hard and develop in the WHL, and who knows where he can go from there.

Stephen Johnston
DOB: Feb 24, 1990 | Team: Belleville | League: OHL
CLICK HERE to see Johnston's statistics

Bio: Johnston, born in Guelph, Canada, was selected by the Red Wings with their sixth round choice in 2008 (181st overall).  He will continue his development in Belleville, where he had two goals and seven assists in 56 games last year.  Johnston played midget AAA and high school before moving to the OHL.

Joakim Andersson
DOB: Feb 5, 1989 | Team: Vastra Frolunda | League: Swedish Elite
CLICK HERE to see Andersson's statistics

Bio: The Red Wings took Andersson in the third round (88th overall) in 2007.  The center from Munkedal, Sweden will spend his first full season with Vastra Frolunda HC Goteborg.  He skated between the top and junior Vastra Frolunda club last season, recording one goal in nine games with the top squad.

Julien Cayer
DOB: July 6, 1989 | Team: Clarkson | League: ECAC
CLICK HERE to see Cayer's statistics

Bio: Cayer, the Wings’ fifth round choice in 2008 (151st overall), decided to go the college route, and is currently a freshman at Clarkson University.  Last season, he played high school hockey in New York, with the Northwood Huskies.  There, he accumulated 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in 42 games.

Gustav Nyquist
DOB: Sep 1, 1989 | Team: Maine | League: Hockey East

Bio:
Not a lot of Europeans choose the college route when they’re top NHL prospects, but that’s what Nyquist did.  The Red Wings selected Nyquist in the fourth round (121st overall) in 2008, and he will hone his skills at the University of Maine.  Last season, he scored 11 goals and 20 assists in 24 games playing juniors in Sweden.

Jesper Samuelsson
DOB: June 13, 1988 | Team: Timra | League: Swedish Elite

Bio:
The Red Wings’ scouting staff has made quite the name for themselves, unearthing incredible talents in late rounds of the draft.  They are hoping to do that feat once again in the form of Samuelsson.  He was drafted in the seventh round (211th) in 2008, the last pick made by the Red Wings.  He will continue to develop in Timra, after scoring 20 goals and 42 assists wit HC Vita Hasten last season.

Right Wing

DOB: Mar 14, 1987 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio: Ritola, the Wings' fourth round pick in 2005 (103rd overall), will spend the season in Grand Rapids, but he's not far off from the NHL.  In the preseason, he played in six games, and finished with a plus-one.  He recorded eight shots and four penalty minutes.  Last season, he had seven goals and 15 assists in 72 AHL games.

Defense

Jonathan Ericsson
DOB: Mar 2, 1984 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio: Ericsson is one of the Wings' most promising prospects.  The Wings' ninth round choice (291st overall) in 2002 has been aging well in Grand Rapids, and is inching closer to the big leagues.  He dressed in six games this preseason, finished plus-one, and ate up a lot of minutes on the blue line every game.

Jakub Kindl
DOB: Feb 10, 1987 | Team: Grand Rapids | League: AHL

Bio: Kindl, the Wings' first round pick in 2005 (19th overall), is another prospect inching closer to joining the Wings.  He only made it into one preseason game this year, however, due to a groin injury.  Last season, he recorded three goals and 14 assists in 75 games.

Brian Lashoff
DOB: July 16, 1990 | Team: Barrie | League: OHL

Max Nicastro
DOB: Mar 2, 1990 | Team: Chicago | League: USHL

Bio:
