Chris Osgood
Goaltending Development Coach

Osgood enters his second season as goaltending development coach of the Red Wings and his 16th  overall with the club. In his position, Osgood assists goaltending coach Jim Bedard, working closely with Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson, as well as serving as a mentor and teacher to goaltending prospects currently playing with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League and the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL. Osgood also scouts goaltenders in the professional and amateur ranks, providing insight into prospective trades and free agent acquisitions, as well as evaluating goalies considered potential targets at the annual NHL entry draft.

The 39-year-old Osgood announced his retirement as a player on July 19, 2011, after 17 seasons in the National Hockey League. He was originally a third-round pick (54th overall) of the Red Wings in the 1991 draft. The Peace River, Alberta, native played in 744 career games for the Red Wings, New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues. Osgood spent 14 seasons donning the winged wheel in the Motor City over two separate stints with the club. He won three Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1997, 1998 and 2008, and played 565 regular-season games in a Red Wings sweater, notching 317 wins and 39 shutouts, trailing only the legendary Terry Sawchuk in both categories (351, 85). Perhaps his best individual season came in 1995-96, when he led the NHL with 39 wins and finished as the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender (Jim Carey, Washington). The 5-foot-10, 175-pound netminder also became just the second goalie in NHL history to shoot and score a goal that season when he deposited the puck into an empty net during a 4-2 win over the Hartford Whalers on March 6, 1996. Osgood finished his career as Detroit’s all-time leader in postseason appearances by a goaltender (110) and holds the franchise records for playoff wins (67) and playoff shutouts (14).  He ranks fourth all-time among NHL goaltenders with 15 postseason shutouts and eighth all-time with 74 playoff wins.

In 2010-11, his final NHL season as a player, Osgood became just the 10th goaltender in NHL history to win 400 games with an acrobatic 46-save performance in a 4-3 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche on December 27, 2010, in Denver. He played his final NHL game on January 4, 2011, making 22 saves in a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.  Osgood finished his career ranked 10th all-time among NHL goaltenders with 401 wins.

Chris and his wife, Jenna, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Sydney, and one son, Max. The family resides in Plymouth, MI, during the season.
