troops this Friday on
Military Appreciation Night

DETROIT
–  The Detroit Red Wings will host their annual Military Appreciation Night this Friday, Nov. 11, when the team takes on the Edmonton Oilers at 7:30 p.m. on Veterans/Remembrance Day (FOX Sports Detroit and 97.1 The Ticket). All fans attending Friday’s game will receive a military dog tag featuring the U.S. and Canadian flags at any of the giveaway locations throughout the arena.

Volunteers from Blue Star Mothers of America Chapter 180 will be on hand to collect care package items and monetary donations at each entrance of Joe Louis Arena when the doors open at 6:00 p.m. For each item or cash donation to Blue Star Mothers of America, fans will receive a raffle ticket and be entered to win an autographed Justin Abdelkader jersey.

Blue Star Mothers of America will include all items collected on Friday when they pack the care package boxes the following week and then ship them to soldiers currently serving overseas. All monetary donations from Friday’s collection will help cover the cost of shipping these care packages.

Suggested care package items include:

•    Wet wipes (cleaning wipes like Clorox and individual hand wipes like Wet Ones)
•    Hygiene items: travel size shampoo and conditioner, bar soap, deodorant, razors, shaving cream (not in an aerosol can), toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
•    Socks and t-shirts (must be dark brown or khaki)
•    Holiday DVDs and items (i.e. Santa hats and Christmas stockings)
•    Laundry detergent and fabric softeners (unscented)
•    Chapstick and sunscreen
•    Gum
•    Powdered drink mixes and individual packets
•    Magazines, books and CDs
•    Playing cards
•    Disposable cameras
•    Hard candy

Merchandise Firesale
Fans attending Friday’s game will have the unique opportunity to purchase autographed and game-used items from former Red Wings’ players at a team firesale behind Section 126 on the concourse. Items range from autographed, game-used sticks of Dominik Hasek and Brad May to autographed Marian Hossa jerseys to signed pucks and photos of former players. All of the proceeds raised from the firesale will benefit the Operation USO Care Package program. For every $25 brought in, USO can send a care package to a soldier currently serving overseas.

“Support Our Troops” Banner
Fans are also encouraged to sign an eight-foot-wide banner behind Section 112 on the concourse Friday night. The banner has already been signed by the entire 2011-12 team and reads “The Detroit Red Wings Support Our Troops.” The Wings will send the team-signed and fan-signed banner to a 300-person unit out of Selfridge Air National Guard Base currently serving overseas in Afghanistan.

Wings Honor Military at Game
Military members in attendance will be honored during the game, including guests in the Quicken Loans Budd Lynch Veterans Suite. Earlier in the day, 50 military members plus their guests will attend the Red Wings morning skate at 10:30 a.m.

The Red Wings are proud to support U.S. troops from all five branches and do so throughout the entire season:

•    Quicken Loans Budd Lynch Veterans Suite: The Wings host 20 military members (active and veteran) at each home game in a suite with pizza and beverages provided. Guests also receive a Red Wings military dog tag.

•    White’s Warriors: Defenseman Ian White hosts a military member and their guest at each home game. The military member gets two tickets, two meal vouchers, two gift bags and a post-game meet and greet with White.

•    Care Package Program: The Red Wings typically send out around 100 Red Wings’ care packages to fans serving in the military around the world each season.

•    Donated Equipment: The Wings donated a full set of street hockey equipment to the Gamberi 18 platoon serving in Afghanistan during the 2011 offseason. Prior to receiving the equipment, the unit had been improvising, using big sticks and metal pipes to play their weekly hockey game. Now, the soldiers are playing weekly street hockey games with proper hockey equipment to boost the unit's morale.

•    Visits to VA Medical Centers and Bases: Over the last year, the Red Wings have visited three VA medical centers across the state and the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base. In February 2011, forward Mike Modano watched the first period of the Wings-Bruins game with veterans residing at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. As part of the 2011 MI Wings Community Tour presented by ITC, the Wings’ four American players stopped at the Battle Creek ANGB to sign autographs and take photos with the soldiers.

•    Donation to Operation USO Care Package Program: Between January and March 2011, the Red Wings players joined forces with Canadian Club to raise funds for the USO. For every Red Wings' goal scored at Joe Louis Arena, the two parties each donated $50 to the USO. At the end of the season, the American players and representatives from Canadian Club presented two checks totaling $10,000 to the USO in a pre-game check presentation on March 30.

•    Hosted Guests from Army Wounded Warriors Program: On March 23, 2011, Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch hosted U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Under Secretary of the U.S. Army Dr. Joseph Westphal and eight wounded soldiers as part of the Army Wounded Warrior Program. The guests enjoyed the game from the comforts of the Ilitch's suite.
