Detroit Red Wings
Associate Coach 1993-2004

In 1986, Barry Smith began a long-running career and association with legendary head coach Scotty Bowman in Buffalo, and that relationship remains strong today with both of them working together with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Smith began his coaching career in 1975 at Elmira College, where he helped get the Soaring Eagles’ Division III program off the ground, compiling a 94-19-1 record following a 1-15-1 start. He guided the Eagles to two NCAA finals in six years.

Bowman brought Smith onboard to the Sabres’ coaching staff for the start of the 1986-87 season. Smith remained in Buffalo, working for three head coaches in three seasons before making a move to Pittsburgh in 1990, working first for head coach Bob Johnson, then Bowman. Smith won his first two of five Stanley Cup championships as an assistant coach with the Penguins in ’91 and ’92.

Smith followed Bowman to Detroit where he remained for 11 seasons, and helped the Red Wings win three Stanley Cup titles. Smith also served as an assistant on Wayne Gretzky’s staff in Phoenix from 2005-07.

Prior to his work with the Blackhawks, Smith spent three seasons as coach and director of player personnel with SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey league. Under his leadership, the team recorded 322 points in three seasons. His international resume also includes stints as an assistant coach for Team USA in the 1991 World Cup, and as associate head coach at the 2007 World Championship. He also helped coach Team Sweden at the 1996 World Cup and the 1998 Winter Olympics.

A 1972 graduate of Ithaca College, Smith was inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame for both hockey and football in 1992. He and his wife, Mary, have two children, Ryan and Molly.

Smith is entering his third season with the Blackhawks and his second as the club’s director of player development. He previously served as the Blackhawks’ European development advisor and pro scout.
