![]() The Red Wings’ minor league affiliates in Grand Rapids (AHL) and Toledo (ECHL) both began their seasons this past weekend, with both clubs skating in front of capacity crowds on the outskirts of Hockeytown.
After suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Admirals at Van Andel Arena on Friday night, the Griffins earned a point during a 4-3 shootout loss to Hamilton on Saturday to move into a tie with Rockford for third place in the Midwest Division (click HERE for video highlights). Jeff Hoggan and Landon Ferraro currently lead Grand Rapids in scoring with 1G-1A-2P apiece while goaltender Tom McCollum has posted a 2.77 GAA and 0.917 thus far on the young season. The Griffins will head east for a two-game road trip this coming weekend, battling the Americans in Rochester on Friday night prior to taking on the Marlies in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. Both of these games will be broadcast live on 1300 AM in Grand Rapids.
The Walleye, meanwhile, got off to a strong start to their season on Saturday by earning a 4-1 victory in front of 8,000 fans at the Huntington Center. Highly-touted goaltending prospect Petr Mrzaek made 33 saves in his professional debut, picking up First Star of the Game honors in the process. Former Western Michigan star Max Campbell scored two goals in the home victory while linemates Andrej Nestrasil (1G-2A) and Travis Novak (0G-2A) also turned in multi-point performances.
