Bob was not a boy scout, as his nickname would attest, and his suspensions for various altercations made more news than his short appearances in the NHL. In 1955 he was suspended by the AHL for punching a referee during a Calder Cup playoff game between his Pittsburgh team and Buffalo. He was fined $575 and was banned from the remainder of the playoffs.

His NHL tour of duty included Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago, never for a full season, between 1953 and 1958. Although he proved a decent scorer elsewhere, he managed just a few goals in the Original Six, and spent most of his years in the minors waiting to be called up as a fill-in or replacement for an injured regular.

Incredibly, after almost 19 years of tough, grinding hockey, Bailey had his best offensive season when he was 34, scoring 132 points for the Dayton Gems in the IHL in 1965-66.
