Phil Besler
Phil Besler
Right Wing
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 180
Shoots: Right
Born: Dec 9, 1913
Birthplace: Melville, SK, Canada
Acquired: Traded to Detroit by Chicago for Charley Mason on January 27, 1939.
Winger Phil Besler was a mainstay with the Melville Millionaires of the SSHL in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He missed the entire 1931-32 season.

Besler returned to hockey the following year and played another two years in the SSHL. As a member of the Prince Albert Mintos he led the league with 31 goals in 21 games. He made the jump to the NHL for eight games during the 1935-36 season skating for the Boston Bruins. The next two years of his career were spent in the minors before the Chicago Blackhawks offered him a free-agent contract. He played 17 games with Chicago in 1938-39 where he had one goal and four points before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in January, 1939.

Besler had hoped a change of scenery might propel his chances of earning a full-time job in the NHL, but was sent to the AHL after just five contests with the Wings. In 30 NHL games, Besler counted five points. He continued to play hockey in the AHA until 1942 with the Omaha Knights.
