Defenseman Ian Cushenan began his professional hockey career as a member of the Quebec Aces of the QHL in 1954-55, playing six games with the club before moving to the American Hockey League with the Cleveland Barons. In 56 games, Cushenan had a goal and 14 points. He played two more seasons in Cleveland before getting the call to play for the Chicago Blackhawks for eleven games in 1956-57. Having sufficiently impressed the Hawks' coaching staff, Cushenan earned a roster spot with Chicago the next year, playing in 61 games and scoring ten points. He was also chosen to play in the NHL all-star game.

In 1958-59, Cushenan signed a contract with the Montreal Canadiens and he suited up for 35 games with the Habs. Montreal went on to win their fourth of what would be five consecutive Stanley Cup championships that spring.

Cushenan joined the New York Rangers in 1959-60, playing in 17 games. The following three years of his pro career were spent in the minor leagues before he got another shot at the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, playing five games in the 1963-64 season. That was the final NHL stop for Cushenan who played two more years in the AHL with the Buffalo Bisons. He played on three AHL Calder Cup championship teams, with Springfield in 1960 and 1961 and as a member of the Buffalo Bisons in 1963.
