In 1975, he was drafted a respectable 37th overall by Detroit and made the team that fall as a 20-year-old. He split the season with the farm team in Kalamazoo, but the next season he played full-time and had a disastrous minus-43 rating on a bad Red Wings team. After one more year, he spent most of 1978-79 in the minors, and that summer Detroit left him exposed in the expansion draft.
The Winnipeg Jets prior to the team's first year in the NHL claimed Cameron, but he played only a year and a half in Winnipeg before retiring.
