Acquired: Traded to Detroit by NY Americans with $7,500 for Earl Robertson on May 9, 1937.
At 6-foot and 205-pounds, John Doran was certainly one of the bigger hockey players of his era and he was not shy about using his size advantage.

During a five-year NHL career, Doran played with the New York Americans, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Montreal Canadiens.

Doran's first NHL season was 1933-34 when he wore the Americans' sweater while scoring a goal and four assists and taking 40 penalty minutes in 39 games. In 1935-36 he appeared in 25 games, scoring four goals and two assists. His last year in New York was 1936-37, when he suited up for 21 games. The next fall he had joined the Detroit Red Wings and played there for seven games.

Doran's fifth and final season in the NHL was played with the Montreal Canadiens in 1939-40 when he scored two goals and 16 assists in 42 games.
