Right winger Fern Gauthier played over 200 games with four different NHL clubs in the 40s. He was a decent goal scorer who could also check and battle hard for the puck in the corners.

Born in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Gauthier played with the Shawinigan Cataracts in the QPHL and QSHL before joining the AHL's Washington Lions in 1941-42. After spending the entire 1942-43 schedule in the minors, the young forward was loaned to the New York Rangers by the Montreal Canadiens. He scored 14 goals as a rookie and worked well on a line with John Mahaffey and Ossie Aubuchon but was returned to Montreal after the season.

During the 1944-45 season Gauthier scored a personal best 18 goals while teaming with linemates Buddy O'Connor and Dutch Hiller. In October, 1945, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he spent the last four years of his career. Gauthier was a consistent role player for the Motowners and helped them reach the Stanley Cup final in 1948. Following his NHL days he played briefly in the NHL before returning to senior hockey. Gauthier retired in 1952 after starring offensively for the St. Laurent Castors.
