Born in Georgetown, Ontario, Goldham was a junior standout with the Toronto Marlboros for two years. During his first pro season in 1941-42 he played well for the AHL's Hershey Bears before he was recalled to the NHL. The young rearguard scored 11 points in the last 19 games of the season then contributed to the Leafs' unprecedented comeback from a 3 games to 0 deficit in the finals to beat the Detroit Red Wings for the Cup. Following the season Goldham received the additional honor of placement on the AHL second all-star team for his earlier work.
Following the Cup win, Goldham spent three years in the Canadian navy and played with three different squads. He returned to Toronto and scored seven goals in 1945-46 but the club missed the playoffs. Injuries limited him to 11 games the next season then he was part of the package sent to the Chicago Black Hawks for Max Bentley in October, 1947.
Goldham was a solid addition to the Hawks' defense for 2 1/2 seasons. He then joined the Detroit Red Wings in a multi-player deal prior to the 1950-51 season that involved such big names as Gaye Stewart, Harry Lumley and Jack Stewart. Goldham's steady play contributed to Detroit Stanley Cup wins in 1952, 1954 and 1955. He retired in 1956 after the Wings lost the Stanley Cup finals to the Montreal Canadiens. During the 1970s Goldham remained visible on "Hockey Night In Canada" television broadcasts in Toronto as an analysts during the first and second intermissions.
