Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Herchenratter played junior with the local Greenshirts of the OHA then played in the MOHL with Detroit Holzbaugh and the Windsor Bulldogs. After signing as a free agent with the Red Wings, he recorded three points in 10 games in 1940-41 then spent most of his time with the Indianapolis Capitals of the AHL.

During the 40s the hardworking forward played in the minors and senior leagues while also spending two years in military service. After World War II he played in the AHL and USHL before returning to his hometown to play senior hockey with the well-known Dutchmen. He retired in 1950 after playing three years for the club.
