Netminder Doug Grant was a solid back-up for parts of seven years in the 70s and 80s. He spent most of his time in the minors but was usually summoned several times each year as an injury replacement or as a means of shaking up the existing goalies.

Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Grant played with the hometown Royals then spent a year at Memorial University in St. John's. Late in the 1971-72 season he was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings and assigned to the Fort Worth Wings of the CHL. The next year he suited up for the AHL's Virginia Wings and led the league with six shutouts and was named to the league's first all-star team.

Grant played 37 games for Detroit in 1973-74 but was chiefly a farmhand over the next two seasons. In March 1976 the steady netminder was traded to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations that ended up being defenceman Rick Wilson. Grant was solid in 17 appearances for St. Louis in 1976-77 but the club had Ed Johnston and young phenom Ed Staniowski to guard the cage. During the last few years of his career he excelled on the CHL's Salt Lake Golden Eagles before retiring in 1982. In 1978 he and teammate Ed Stanowski shared the Terry Sawchuk Trophy for allowing the fewest goals in the CHL. Grant duplicated this feat the next year in tandem with veteran Terry Richardson.
