Born in Victoriaville, Quebec, Lemieux scored 68 goals in two junior seasons with the Hamilton Red Wings of the OHA. He turned pro with the CHL's Memphis Wings but suited up for only one NHL game with the parent Detroit Red Wings. Lemieux was claimed by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1967 expansion draft and was a fine playmaker for two years. During this time he was often paired with Bill Flett and Eddie Joyal.

Lemieux was traded to the New York Rangers in June 1969. After playing 55 games for the Blueshirts in 1969-70, he was re-acquired by Los Angeles and remained there until the early stages of the 1973-74 season. The veteran forward toiled briefly with the Rangers and Buffalo Sabres that year before retiring.
