Acquired: Traded to Detroit by Vancouver for Detroit's sixth-round choice (Phil Von Stefenelli) in 1988 entry draft on November 21, 1986.
Drafted: BOS / 1975 NHL Amateur Draft
Round: 1st (14th overall)
Doug Halward was drafted by Boston in the 1975 entry draft and spent the next three seasons dividing his time between the Bruins and the AHL Rochester Americans. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations in September 1978. He had his personal best season in 1979-80, posting 56 points and plus-14 rating in 63 games.

In March 1981 Halward was traded to Vancouver for a draft pick and future considerations, after suffering a knee injury that the Kings management felt he should have recovered from sooner. Once in Vancouver, he had surgery on the knee and joined the Canucks line-up after making a full recovery. He played the majority of the next five seasons for Vancouver before being traded to the Red Wings in November 1986. He played a few games for the Wings before being sidelined with phlebitis, and didn't return to the line-up full time until the 1987-88 season.

Halward posted a career high 130 penalty minutes, unusual for Halward who had always been known as more of an offensive defenseman than a scrapper. The 1988-89 season was his last in the NHL. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in January 1989, and played two dozen games for the Oilers before retiring.
